NAF employment is considered federal employment.  It is, however, different from federal civil service employment because the monies used to pay the salaries of NAF employees come from a different source.  Civil service positions are paid for by money appropriated by Congress.  NAF money, on the other hand, is self-generated by Air Force clubs, bowling centers, golf courses, and other activities that use NAF employees.

Q:  What is the difference between a flexible and a regular employee?

We have two types of NAF positions:  “flexible” and “regular.”  Flexible employees have work schedules that depend on the needs of the activity.  Flexible employees can work anywhere from 0 to a maximum of 40 hours per week, and do not receive benefits.  Regular employees can work between 20 and 40 hours a week depending on position requirements, and are entitled to receive benefits.  The benefits they are entitled to include annual and sick leave, life and health insurance, 401K, and retirement plan.

Anyone can apply for a NAF position as long as they are legally able to work in the US (work permit must be provided) and qualify for the position which they are applying.  The minimum age requirement to work on base is 16 years of age.  To work at the CDC or YC, you must be 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma.  You must meet the minimum age requirement for the State of North Dakota for any positions which deal with either serving or selling alcohol.
